Spilt water on MacBook
Water damage is a common issue that can affect anyone, but unfortunately, incorrect information on the internet often leads to further damage and makes it difficult to repair. It’s important to ignore false information and avoid damaging your electronic products.
What NOT to do when a liquid spills on your MacBook:
- Do not attempt to open your MacBook or computer
- Do not plug in the charger
- Do not place it in rice for days
- Do not use external drying devices
These actions will not repair your MacBook and may even cause further damage.
Why do these actions not help?
When the liquid gets inside your MacBook, the logic board begins to get damaged as soon as you start taking these actions. The main problem is that the battery is connected to the logic board. As long as the battery is connected, your actions or whether you turn off the computer will not make a difference. If the battery has power, permanent damage starts due to short circuits in the logic board. This is true for MacBooks and all electronic products with batteries.
What to do when a liquid spills on your MacBook:
If possible, go to a nearby Apple repair service provider. Going to an Apple Store or other official Apple repair centres is not recommended as they do not offer repairs for liquid damage devices. They only offer to replace parts or sell a new MacBook, which can be expensive. On the other hand, a private Apple repair company may be able to repair your MacBook for a lower cost.
Additionally, if your primary concern is to recover your data, it’s best to choose a private Apple repair centre. Apple Stores and authorized Apple repair centres do not offer component repair for the logic board, so they cannot help with data recovery.
If you do not have a chance to take it to an apple repair service provider when the liquid is poured, it is helpful to follow these steps.
- Obtain the necessary tools to open your MacBook.
- Remove the back cover and disconnect the battery connector from the logic board.
- Clean and dry any affected parts, if possible
- Leave the pieces to dry for at least 24 hours.
- After 24 hours, reassemble your MacBook and use it as usual.
If you are unable to take your MacBook to an Apple repair service provider right away, it’s helpful to follow these steps to minimize damage.
